Krekenava is located on the right bank of the Nevėžys River, halfway between Panevėžys and Kėdainiai, 13 km west of Ramygala and 27 km southwest of Panevėžys. The town was first mentioned in historical sources 600 years ago. Its Shrine, which has long been famous for a miraculous painting of the Mother of God and Child as well as for an annual Indulgenced Feast of the Assumption, attracts pilgrims mainly from the northern and central parts of the Lithuanian region of Aukštaitija. In 2009, the church of Krekenava was declared a daughter shine of the Roman Basilica of St Mary Major.
