John Paul II and Šiauliai Cathedral
The Cathedral of the Apostles Saints Peter and Paul is the heart of the Šiauliai diocese, which Pope John Paul II established on Mary 28, 1997. The Holy Father appointed Eugenijus Bartulis, then rector of the inter-diocesan seminary in Kaunas, to be the first bishop of Šiauliai. He received Episcopal consecration on June 29, 1997, in Kaunas Cathedral Basilica, and on July 13 of the same year solemnly took possession of Šiauliai Cathedral.
