John Paul II and Kaunas Cathedral
Pope John Paul II visited Kaunas on September 6, 1993. In the morning he celebrated a solemn Holy Mass at the confluence of Lithuania’s two largest rivers, and over lunch he met with the bishops of Lithuanian at the archdiocesan curia. After lunch and before a gathering with young people at Darius and Girėnas Stadium, accompanied by Cardinal Vincentas Sladkevičius, John Paul II spent some time in personal prayer before the Blessed Sacrament at the main altar of the Kaunas Cathedral Basilica. This event is immortalized in a plaque on a column at one end of the Cathedral, opposite the side entrance.
